today we learned: there are people out there who find a 15" laptop to be too big

we do not comprehend this mentality, 15" is too *small*, we need a 17" one minimum (and i don't think they come bigger)
-F

@noiob that's just too small

the vaio (why is it mirrored by the way?) could be a good phone form factor though, i miss having a physical keyboard on our phone
-F

@Felthry I dunno it's just from image search. Pretty sure the Vaio runs Windows 7

@Felthry also phones with keyboards have even less screen real estate and you can't swipe

@noiob that's why you have it do this, full size screen and you still get a keyboard

why did they stop making these, we had one of these for years and loved it

also we barely even know what "swipe" means in this context so that doesn't matter to us
-F

@Felthry

why did they stop making these

no one bought them

also we barely even know what "swipe" means in this context

on many soft keyboards you can just swipe from letter to letter and it'll figure out the word, it's amazing for one-handed typing

@noiob they're exactly the kind of phone we want and i want a new one like that

and yeah we've seen people using things like that, it does Not agree with the way we think about typing
-F

@noiob oh hey that one actually supports CDMA networks, it might be possible to use it on verizon in the US
-F

@noiob concerned about the "preorder" button with a "shipping in february 2022" though. that was two months ago, it's not really a preorder anymore
-F

@Felthry it's an enthusiast phone for a tiny market

@noiob why is it that we keep having to go to high-end niche products for what we consider basic needs

we also had to get a fancy gaming laptop just to get one that didn't have those awful tiny arrow keys
-F

@Felthry well, I'd argue that most people actually like the standard glass rectangle phone. I sure do

@noiob why can't they at least provide *something* for people who don't

why do all the US carriers have to lock everything down to their "approved" list of devices

why can we not connect the devices we want to use and use them

why do phones have to be made so expensive and fragile

why can't tech be more accessible, both in the disability sense and the financial sense
-F

@noiob why did firefox have to break all their old extensions and make it so that a feature we rely upon is literally impossible to implement in an extension for current firefox

why do websites have to keep breaking compatibility with waterfox classic, the only way we know of to continue using the old extensions

why can't people consider accessibility and customizability in anything when it comes to tech
-F

@Felthry

why did firefox have to break all their old extensions and make it so that a feature we rely upon is literally impossible to implement in an extension for current firefox

because the old extension system was frankly, unsustainable. They had to ditch it to be able to have the browser keep up with Chrome

why do websites have to keep breaking compatibility with waterfox classic

that's on waterfox classic

@noiob well why didn't they replace the old extension system with one that still allows extensions to open files on the computer, because that's literally the only thing that's keeping us from switching to a more compatible browser
-F

Follow

@noiob so you can double click a downloaded file in a bottom-of-the-window statusbar and have it open as though you'd double clicked it in the folder in your file manager
-F

@noiob with the new extension framework doing that has to open a modal window asking if you want to open the file and yes we want to open the file that's why we double clicked on the thing
-F

@noiob i just want things to stop breaking and changing things that were the way we liked them and i want things to be the way we're used to them being
-F

@noiob sorry i think i'm having a bit of a depression spiral here

it feels like everything we use keeps being changed to be less usable to us and there's nothing we can do to keep it working how we like it other than try to keep the existing things going as long as possible
-F

@Felthry because computers are awful and we should just stopt trying to make them work

also the perfect phone was the 2009 Palm Pre (and its direct successors), everyone else is just chasing its shadow

@noiob apology accepted

sorry i didn't make it clearer sooner that that was happening
-F

@Felthry oh, I think we talked about this. Are you that determined to stay on a Firefox fork? Chrome and Edge have their downloads at the bottom

@noiob i want absolutely nothing to do with chrome or edge, firefox isn't great either but at least it's not google or microsoft
