pretty sure the majority of our friends and even remote acquaintances are some flavor of queer

this thought isn't going anywhere, i just thought it

re: Hobby electronics info request

@starkatt (oh yeah and if you're trying to do BGA--which I strongly discourage, by the way, they're notoriously difficult to reflow even with proper equipment--you absolutely need to use lead-free solder paste if it's a lead-free BGA, and leaded if it's a leaded BGA. This restriction is not the case for other packages, just something to do with how the solder balls on a BGA package have to melt properly)

re: Hobby electronics info request

@starkatt We generally use wire solder, not paste, but I do know that 63/37 is generally superior to 60/40, and 62/36/2 (tin/lead/silver) is generally superior to both but more expensive due to the silver content

what type of flux you use is going to depend on the board

oh and you probably want to get boards with ENIG, not HASL, if you're going to be doing high-pin-count parts with paste; HASL isn't flat enough for a lot of LGA, BGA, or QFN parts to reliably get all their pins adhered

@noiob you can't tell me there have been over 250 video compression standards since the late 80s or early 90s or whenever video compression started to be A Thing, though

re: science news (subatomic physics), BBC article

@LexYeen I'm not going to demand independent confirmation too strongly, as i'm not 100% sure there are any other labs in the world with the capability to do that kind of measurement at the moment

but a confirmation to 5σ, or even just a few σ, would get us pretty interested
-F

re: science news (subatomic physics), BBC article

@LexYeen (of course that's if it turns out not to be a measurement error, like that thing a while ago with "faster-than-light" neutrinos)
-F

why is h.264 264 anyway, why isn't it just 4
-F

@Trinket we like hearing from you whether there's new art or not!

re: science news (subatomic physics), BBC article

@LexYeen yeah that's pretty big

not sure what the implications are exactly but a 0.1% disagreement with theory is, despite what it sounds like, extremely large

re: New short story: Malware

@socks well that's cute and weird!
-F

@kat @witchfynder_finder oh damn

we bought it on steam last month thinking it was already out and then thought well okay we'll just wait for it to really come out

i wasn't expecting it to be bad
-F

@socks that sounds like it was probably translated by someone who did not speak much spanish
-F

@socks oh *dear*

that particular one (since that dual meaning of party exists in english but i doubt it does in japanese) makes me think it may have been based on the english translation (the one done by woolsey that i mentioned) but with stuff like that i expect all the puns that woolsey used would have been horribly mangled too
-F

re: Triangle Strategy

@socks thinking about this is kinda making me wonder how the other language translations of things like final fantasy 6 were, since they wouldn't have had Woolsey
-F

re: Triangle Strategy

@socks ah hell, that sounds like a bad english translation

unless the spanish translators took a lot of liberties to make it better
-F

@packbat it's not painful or anything, just needed to wipe it off and change clothes

might take a shower while we're home for lunch

Lesson learned today: If dremeling FR-4, always be sure the side of the dremel wheel that touches the board is the side that is moving downward, unless you like the idea of fiberglass dust all over you

also konami, mostly known for their video game division that they tried (and mostly succeeded) to kill off a few years ago, who also do real estate

i guess japanese companies just do a lot of things???

always feels weird to us that yamaha makes both high-quality audio equipment (including a number of sound chips of historic importance like the OPN, OPL2, OPL3, etc) *and* for some reason makes motorcycles? i don't know if the motorcycles are high quality
