@heatherhorns_lite hmm. would be interesting to have a font with a bunch of variations for each character, chosen pseudorandomly (as a function of surrounding characters maybe? using the same sort of logic as is used to switch between forms of Arabic characters, but with no logic to it)
-F

@Kaffe yeah, i really wish there was one near us. all we have is a kfc
-F

@anthracite ...you *are* someone we've idly wanted to commission for a While, though we're lacking in ideas lately
-F

@socks it's a fascinating read because it's all about vacuum tubes, a subject that's not ever talked about in modern engineering classes

also it has a line somewhere about how the cathode ray tube "will likely see increasing adoption in commercial and scientific applications", which is a huge understatement
-F

@socks we have a book about electrical engineering from the 1930s where the very first sentence is "It may seem unreasonable to begin a book dealing with the rapidly growing industry based on the motion of electrons with the statement that no one knows what an electron is, but such is the case." (Electron Tubes in Industry, 2nd edition, by Keith Henney)

-F

@spex You might pay a small premium but electronic components suppliers like Digikey or Mouser might be worth looking at? Companies that primarily sell stuff for industrial use generally have a higher standard of quality

@noiob well, presumably there's some other natural disaster that the sirens are there to warn about?

here in the northwest the only real thing that happens is wildfires and there's no point having sirens for those because if you're too close your own fire alarms will go off, and if you're far away from them you'll still know because of all the smoke
-F

@noiob of the two regions we've lived in, the south is the only one that has them

I guess the great plains might have them too, since they get tornadoes too

tornadoes don't really *happen* in most of the country though, so they don't have siren warning systems for them
-F

...i imagine anyone who's never lived there visiting the US south at the wrong time will be *very* surprised by the monthly tornado siren test

even more so when no one around them reacts to it
-F

re: severe weather

@Austin_Dern Do they not do tests so that you know what they sound like?
