ugh, toay is one of those days where tiny things feel overwhelming

the Hearth :ms_agender_flag: boosted

i've often been able to successfully explain Sonas, fur or otherwise, to people outside of the (generally queer/furry) culture with:

The (mental) image of yourself that makes your heart feel Smile the most.

if you like being represented by yourself! tadah! that's your sona! it's you!

if you wanna be a large sparkly space robot/AI who protects newly-formed planets from space debris, tadah! that's your sona! that's you!

it's a way of putting it in a perspective of self-enjoyment/fulfillment/love for people who Just Don't Get It on first contact.

don't know what to do about this, can't find any other suppliers or alternative cores

got a quote for the part we need, and it cost like 1/4 as much as we were expecting

but it has a 12 week lead time and the minimum order quantity is 32 so we're still paying $1400 to get 32 of a part we need only 4 of, and we won't actually get it until june

Show thread

feeling frustrated and defeated tonight because ugh inductors

this is an at least semi-serious question by the way, if you can hook us up with a core that can achieve about 32μH that won't significantly saturate (less than 5% or so drop in inductance) at 100A times however many turns it takes to get 32μH, please let us know

molypermalloy powder, metglas, whatever works, as long as it's a low loss material

Show thread

anyone know where we might purchase extremely large molypermalloy powder or sendust cores in small quantities?

look we're running out of ideas of where to look and we need low-loss magnetic cores

ughhh we have to use PADS when we're used to using KiCad and everything is Different and Weird

and we can't use it on our home computers either, we have to go in and use the lab computers

have you ever wanted to have a hundred and four kilometers of extremely thin wire?

no?

well, you can buy that anyway! digikey.com/product-detail/en/

we saved $0.08 off of this ~$3000.00 project! Hooray!

(it's lower performance, but still good enough for the task by a wide margin)

Show thread

it _is_ eight cents cheaper, though..... is that sufficient justification to use the neat looking one though

hmm.... sure

Show thread

unfortunately it's substantially worse performance than this much less stylish and more ordinary (and smaller, too) one so it's probably not being used in the project

what is this exponential graph with a marking halfway between 1 and 10 supposed to be telling me

what is the upper limit of the stable region at high currents

this has been Felthry Has Opinions About Electronic Component Brands Hour, next up: Analog Devices vs Texas Instruments

Show thread

I'm used to the cheapest capacitors in digikey searches being from like, Panasonic or KEMET or something

so it's really weird when the cheapest three are, in order, Rubycon, United Chemi-Con, and Nichicon

Also apparently Würth Elektronik does capacitors too, we just know them for making high quality inductors
