ultimately the point of a union has to be not merely to keep management in check, but to displace it altogether and run the company as a worker-owned collective

not that democracy is any guarantee of equality or fairness, of course; it needs to be backed by a robust constitution guaranteeing the rights of every worker in the company (the larger the company the more formal, rigorous, checked and balanced these things need to be - but even in a three-person company, there needs to be some means of ensuring things don't get decided on a perpetual 2-1 majority)
