@error_1202 @katherine prior to 1348 (black death), Brewsters/brewing as a trade, was a female occupation, from selling just a small amount out of their homes to make an additional income, for church ales, and to brewing for and running taverns.

But after the black death, quite a lot of gender roles changed and brewing became dominated by men. Socially, it was acceptable for women to brew before the black death, but was not after it and women would be fined for selling beer from their homes. It's not clear why brewing changed, but lesser people for the amount of work changed a lot of roles socially in general, and once the population increased, it didn't change back.
