re: silly about the dd article, slightly more serious take

@Soreth @Taylor I love the smell of late-stage capitalism and tyrannical majorities in the morning. The raging dumpster fire really adds atmosphere.

re: silly about the dd article, slightly more serious take

@Taylor It’s possibly a worse take, because the primary argument is a specific instance isn’t talking about the same topics as Twitter, backing this with minimal supporting evidence beyond a single user perspective.

Much of the depth of a modern communication platform occurs in private messaging, in interconnections between communities, etc etc etc. It’s difficult to even gain traction on the article’s opinions in that context.

question for folks at the intersection of LGBTQIA+, disabilities, and tech, interviews

For reasons, I’m interested in things interviewers have done for you to help you feel included, especially things that pierce way-too-common misogyny and ableism in tech interviews.

This isn’t a request to have folks interview where I work, so please understand I’m not in that position. But if you know of things that have helped you feel more comfortable with being interviewed, please throw them my way?

silly about the dd article, slightly more serious take

Also, bad takes from opinion writers are one of the best signs a technology is succeeding outside of the mainstream.

For folks that remember when Second Life was new and trendy, bad takes about the inevitable collapse because “these kids aren’t paying attention to the REAL issues” were common. And like Masto, the leftist queer and queer-adjacent communities did just fine, despite ownership of the platform being problematic.

So, yeah.

silly about the dd article

I’m kind of hoping someone posts a delicious Mastodon crumble recipe, because I will totally make it.

@lyon Since we’re talking about spatial data and I _think_ you’re trying to generalize this outside of storing the entire 2D grid, a quadtree is probably what you’re looking for: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadtr

Some other possible approaches here are B+ trees (for entity-relational data) or applying a Bloom filter to the entire set if it is very large. If your grid is very small, using a hash approach like you mention is also optimal.

appreciate-a-dragon day, kobolds

Reminder to also appreciate all of the kobolds today. Their tireless work behind the scenes ensures your dragon is happy, fed, groomed, and well-polished to meet each day.

do not call registry outage, minor vent (-)

Hello, I’m oncall for work while the Do Not Call registry is down, and I just love receiving 5-7 robocalls every day from forged caller ID. I would like to place an order for a very large slingshot, so I can jettison both the people responsible and this administration into the sun. ☀️

@orrery Also, if this at all involves going to or from JIRA, my deepest condolences.

Twitter

@GlitterDisaster@snouts.online Twitter is in a difficult spot, because they can’t filter without tanking their stock or losing their business model. I have some sympathy for their plight, but firmly hope more folks escape to Masto.

game night planning, mostly for locals, how do I do the thing?

@salameleon@snouts.online Thank you!

weird game purchases (+)

@qdot I’m impressed by how well their internal CAD tool works. Decomposing entire engine designs into trees rooted on the engine block, and making that user friendly, must have taken a ton of work to get right.

game night planning, mostly for locals, how do I do the thing?

When I have enough spoons to set this up, I think I’m going to use a Discord server or Telegram group. I’m leaning towards the former, because it facilitates voice chat better (for TTS) and doesn’t do worrisome things with phone numbers. On the other hand, Telegram is better for notifications, I think?

I think I’m looking into how to bridge these two together later, if I can’t settle on just one.

weird game purchases (+)

I bought Auto Mechanic Simulator 2018, and it is everything I hoped it was: blasé, yet completely serviceable as a puzzle game to train the 3D art muscles when I’m too sleepy.

One of my favorite things is they left a few mock-up assets in the final game, assuming players wouldn’t think too hard about them. Which is why their arc welder appears to have the safety instructions for an electric tea kettle.

Bless these developers and the simulation genre in general.

i've read articles about people getting attached to their roombas and not wanting to throw them out. irobot (the company that makes roombas) seemed baffled and a bit put off by this, but my thought was, why not play into it?

give every roomba a little block called the Personality Core. when you buy a new one, you slot your old core in, so you're not throwing out your robo friend, you're just shifting them over to a cool new body
