I'm from a southern/military brat/immigrant community background and steadily drifted leftwards which means my feelings about the holiday alternate between

* this should be a time to reflect on about my relationship to this country

* especially as right now this country is pretty nakedly obviously about being all the negatives. If the positives are there it's real subtle in 2018.

* the holiday's just an excuse to eat and listen to loud noises, it doesn't need to be anything else.

And frankly OUR TROOPS anything is real played if you in any way are cool with screwing veteran benefits, etc. What, someone’s service history is awesome when they’re an abstract rather than a homeless guy, or a vet trying to get HRT, or who’s going to Planned Parenthood for their PCOS meds or whatever? Yer OUR TROOPS are people, not just slogans that justify everything you wanna push on our country.

The whole “nobody is braver than OUR TROOPS” or the stuff people say as reaction. Can we stop this please? *People* are trying damn hard, it’s not a competition.

Bravery is nuanced by what you’re doing, where, shifts you work, your personal life? You’re honestly gonna tell a single mother working food services they’re somehow less than a tech sergeant... or vice versa? Logically do we then rank bravery by MOS next and diss some service people but not others?
