@alyx@witches.town @Felthry If you want, I could put together a video with Sega CD/Saturn comparisons

@zeether I've got a lot of projects on my plate right now. :b But there's lots of other Saturn stuff I want to do!

@Felthry @alyx@witches.town It was redone from scratch. The Saturn version uses streaming music, basically a higher-def version of the original Sega CD music. To save space on the disc, it was replaced with simplified sequenced music on the PS1. It was intended to sound similar, but a number of songs are shorter and it doesn’t sound as good.

@alyx@witches.town @Felthry Oh and wrt music, the music in Lunar 2 is dramatically better on Saturn. It’s actually kinda bad on PS1.

@zeether Yeah, definitely. I'd love that too! Someday I might port the translation over to the Saturn version.

@zeether I'm working with the guy who did those on the translation of Magical School Lunar!

@Felthry @alyx@witches.town Yeah, makes sense! The PS1 versions are perfectly fine. Though the third Lunar game is Saturn-only.

@Felthry @alyx@witches.town

* The PS1 version has higher-quality in-game cutscene voices.
* The second Saturn release and the PS1 version have a small amount of extra bonus content missing from the first Saturn release.

@alyx@witches.town @Felthry Yep! A few differences.

* The PS1 version has a different instrument set (sometimes better, sometimes not) and simplified effects like reverb. Some songs sound wrong as a result.
* The Saturn version has some extra graphical effects that were simplified or removed for the PS1 version.
* The second Saturn version uses MPEG cutscenes.
* All FMVs in both Saturn versions run at 24FPS; some FMVs in the PS1 version were cut down to 12FPS to reduce filesize.

@Felthry They're good games! Definitely worth playing. And when I'm done my project, the third one will finally be available in English too. :D

@Felthry It's Lunar: Silver Star Story! It was originally a Saturn game; the later PS1 port was released in English. I'm porting the English localization from that version back into the original Saturn version.

Obviously the spacing between characters is still wrong, but I should be able to get that soon.

Also, the punctuation is currently displaying wrong because my new font is currently missing reshaded punctuation. There are no periods, and I substituted a full-height exclamation point designed for single-case (e.g., Japanese) text.

Because it’s currently using a fullwidth space designed for Japanese text, and because the spacing between letters is slightly wider than it was in English, text formatted for the PS1 version doesn’t currently fit perfectly. I’ll be fixing that.

There *might* be a halfwidth space control character; I’ll be researching that. But I will definitely be modifying the spacing between characters, so if need be I’ll adjust the space size too.

Dug into the control codes a little more - it turns out the second byte of the space control code, `F90A`, controls the space size. Halving `0A` to `05` produces something (right) that seems to line up with the English version (left). awoo.space/media/RvdVQCixoqQSJ awoo.space/media/EcnJxehiLZ0tR

Here’s a comparison between the PS1 version (left) and my current progress (right). My goal is to have them look identical, except that my translation will have a higher-quality font. awoo.space/media/SJLF8KFTANCTh awoo.space/media/rCCFWsiut8VZq
