wildlife rehab: baby birb feeding edition

on the other hand, in the enclosure with the towhee who didn't want to be fed was a junco who did VERY MUCH WANT FOOD, to the extent of perching on my shoulder, screaming, and fluttering madly. however anything I put in its mouth it immediately spit out. BUT IT REALLY WANTED ME TO DO THAT SOME MORE. I don't know, birds are weird sometimes. XD

so I got all my chores done, and *four* of the end-of-season cleaning chores. and then! (4/?)

and a crow who had no interest in gaping for food, so it's getting tube-feedings, but even it was moved out by the end of the day, leaving me with just six birds. there were a few others outside the nursery proper--a wren and towhee that are still enthusiastic about being hand-fed, and a robin and older towhee who have entered the "HUMANS ARE EVIL" phase, which is *good* and also meant I didn't have to actually feed them. XD (3/?)

today there was a house finch who's getting special treatment for an earlier episode of crop stasis, which it seems to have cleared up just fine; four wrens and a swallow, all jumbled in together, who were all EXTREMELY ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT FOOD OMFG; a floppy-headed robin (don't ask unless you want potentially squicky info), who didn't want to eat but did want to bite me, and I was able to shove food in there between bites; (2/?)

wildlife rehab: baby birb feeding edition

birb breeding season is slowing down, the baby birb nursery is emptying out and the checklist has gone up for end-of-season preparation deep cleaning stuff. I'm usually one of three people there--two volunteers and one intern--but today there was Just Me! so it's a good thing there were a handful of birds that needed care, and none of them was particularly onerous, *and* all the cleaning was done for me before I arrived, woo! Anyone suffering from wildfire smoke this week: You can make a really cheap air purifier by taping a HEPA filter (from the furnace section of a hardware store) to a box fan: youtube.com/watch?v=kH5APw_SLU

I made one last summer, and it really helps. And it's cheap enough that you can make several if you need to clean the air in a larger space.

You might want to tape the filter to the back of the fan (instead of the front, as in the video), so it stays better.

@Leucrotta ... I feel like they have, but... it's not like I've *looked*. XD

I got bit by a seagull today! it's much less hilarious than being bit by a duck--I still have the marks. baby bird wildlife rehab volunteer writeup will post... later!

spoiler alert:

cute yes, but it's ear semaphore for "betray your species and join us, humans"

a long post about the sun

for those of you who don't live in the pnw, imagine sunlight.

now, imagine that sunlight is much more orange than it should be-like it's sunset orange at 10 am.

it's intensely uncomfortable, cause you know that the sunlight that comes through the window at that angle is supposed to be white-yellow, but there's this weird orange light coming through your window at 10 am, and it's wrong, at it keeps being wrong and orange throughout the day

that's what it's like

A man is at a friend's funeral. After the proceedings, he approaches the widow and asks if she minds if he says a word. "No, of course not," she replies. So he grabs a glass and taps a spoon against it to get everyone's attention, and when the muttering dies down, he clears his throat and speaks: "Plethora." He puts the glass back down and everyone continues their conversations. The widow turns to him, with a tear in her eye. "Thank you," she says.

"It means a lot."

@Aradia@mastodon.social @starkatt ugh, I hadn't thought of it being *that* smoky... that may have something to do with how much I'm sneezing today, too. >___<

Hey, everyone what lives in the PNW! It's summer, which means BC is basically entirely on fire once again. Make sure not to spend too long outside and to take proper precautions because there's hella smoke in the air and it's not good for you!

Bun opinion on CW use

@KoBunny @emanate @Heffboom_Konijn someone using a CW as a "this is a harmless joke thing you should click/LOL TRIGGER BAIT" trick would earn an instant unfollow, mute, and block from me. I haven't seen it done that way, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's common usage on instances that aren't federated with the ones I use for Very Good Reasons. :|

@orrery @emanate @Heffboom_Konijn I use it pretty much exactly as I used to use the cut tag back on LJ--trigger warning, long-post warning, you-might-not-be-interested-in-this-subject warning--and sometimes just to be silly, or because I want to make sure that the person reading is willing to make the minor investment of clicking a link before seeing what I wrote, rather than glancing across it randomly.
