@Jssra @Finfell@dragon.style @KawaSeadrake @Kistaro oooh... damn, that's a very good and troubling question. :|
@ayachan@octodon.social I take it you weren't using LiveJournal when the company was sold, and sold again, and hemorrhaged its user base in a relatively short period. I don't believe it's that much of a different argument.
but regardless--I spent my time on birdsite, and I'm done there. and I've refused to have more than a token presence on FB for over a decade. I haven't seen either of them change for the better in any meaningful way since they started. I have better things to do with my time/energy.
holy crap, there's a big log that's been floating in Crater Lake since *1896* and it's history is *amazing*: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Man_of_the_Lake
@ayachan@octodon.social *shrug* sometimes one doesn't have a choice. when an entire platform is being abandoned, or breaking down, it's either find the most compatible new place to hang out, or get left behind in silence. it's a cliche, but it's also true; nothing lasts forever. I've heard very good arguments about why Twitter is ultimately doomed, and Facebook is facing its own heaping pile of problems. I prefer not to bleed out in the service of propping up companies whose ethics infuriate me.
@ayachan@octodon.social but it's like moving away from where you've lived for years, or changing jobs or schools or social clubs. it's just part of life.
I'd like to see more people move away from birdsite and bookface for ethical/legal/political/economic/psychological reasons. there's solid evidence that both those sites cause measurable emotional damage in heavy users. but, yeah... it ain't easy, and it ain't always *possible*. which I also dislike very much. :|
@ayachan@octodon.social enh... I've left so many media platforms, either proactively jumping ship ahead of the curve (birdsite) or lingering far past the departure of everybody I cared about (LiveJournal) or just... wandering away (UseNet). every move means losing some contacts; but it also means finding more contacts, meeting new people, building new connections. some I keep, some I run into again after losing track, some just vanish into the aether.
Legal setback for ICE
A Federal judge has ruled that holding inmates beyond their term of imprisonment so that ICE can prepare deportation action is an unconstitutional violation of their 4th Amendment rights https://thinkprogress.org/immigration-detainers-unconstituitonal-9fde460fdeca/

Oh cool, I started thinking about this at just the right time. The EFF has filed for a DMCA exemption for jailbreaking smart speakers like Amazon Echo and Google Home: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2018/02/eff-vs-iot-drm-omg (CW: Cory Doctorow)
when Nar presents tum, it isn't a trap--not exactly; he really likes it being petted, as much as he likes being petted (and skritched) everywhere else. he just gets REALLY EXCITE with the petting and sometimes he gets SO EXCITE that there's a little bit of biting or kicking going on. but only a little bit! and then he usually runs away because TOO EXCITE XD
