Have you checked out Dominic Deegan? Amazing story even if a bit corny at points.

@kelseyhusky @Soreth @adeptomega @ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz I currently think that most cities could be _made_ sustainable, and more to the point, that doing so is a better long-term strategy than encouraging more sprawl by depopulating the cities we have in favor of more logistical nightmares. Remember how expensive it is to transport goods relative to their point of origin. Shorter transit distance == more sustainability. Bring the farms home.

@Soreth @adeptomega @ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz @kelseyhusky I don't know what the limits of Earth's carrying capacity actually is, but I'm willing to bet we're over it, and I don't think socialism alone as it exists can solve that. Logistics and last-mile problems will still necessitate asking whether cities like Tucson and Las Vegas are sustainable in the long run.

Seasteading isn't far off, I suspect. that said, building from scratch is __hard__, and even if we could, it's unlikely we could save everyone. A future that demands sacrifice for many to ensure the survival of the few isn't a very healthy one, even if we should be on the lookout for Malthus' Curse and managing our global population growth more intelligently.

@adeptomega @ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz @kelseyhusky I would argue that there are other narratives that don't force that false dichotomy, but few of them deal realistically with the problems of long-term living in space. Solarpunk is one of the rare... dare I say it, _hopeful_... burnout scenarios I see that remains firmly rooted on Earth, as opposed to abandoning it for a restart with more data on Terra Nova.

@Phorm I can't tell you what to do. I can't _make_ you become the creature of your own fantasy and imagination. I can only say that, if you choose to pursue it, there is a possibility of success.

@Phorm I've transitioned, made a family, reinvented myself near-completely twice, and I'm still capable of holding down a job and being orthocosmically presentable to the extent I have to keep people fooled as to my inner nature. And I'm not the only one who has. My lived experience is at least evidence that some people can be true to themselves and still survive in the increasingly hostile Outer World. it isn't easy, but it's possible.

@Phorm I can't address your emotions directly. I wish I could. I wish I had the tools to do so, but I can't. You don't know me, you don't know my story, and you have absolutely no reason to take my word on anything. I don't know your situation, I don't know your life, and i can't be inside your head. I see the fear you're facing, and all I can say is that it's understandable and I sympathize with it.

I can also say it's not the only possible future.

Semi-serious question for the fediverse. If I were looking for a _cheap_ digital video camera that isn't going to shatter under my meaty talons, how much should I expect to spend, are there model recommendations I should look into or shy away from, and how many minutes of uninterrupted video can I expect to squeeze out of one with or without attaching to a computer?

@body@mastodon.social I would be shocked to discover that an organization whose goal is to get inside the heads of others __isn't__ able to get their narratives to the top of emotionally compromised people's perceptions. It would suggest that they're not very good at their job.

@Phorm How is being a genie any more ridiculous than anything else we've been asked to swallow in the name of reifying the dominant metanarrative? Politics have become a lethal joke. Companies are offering to mind-control people so they can live in nostalgia cocoons. Moloch is eating itself and will devour all who try to appease it. Giving in to one's own magical nature feels like the least ridiculous thing any of us can do at this point.
