Over the fireplace hung a canvas, grotesque in its lavish detail. A wounded cockatrice occupied much of the center bottom of the image, a single bolt through the poor creature's neck, her blood pooling on the grass below. Above, dominating the frame, stood Baron Decebel. He wore an improbably red hunting jacket and cradled a still-cocked crossbow with one thumb on the bolt and one foot perched on the fallen animal, his face turned towards the heavens. #writing
