I don't know who needs to hear this but abandoning that open source project that is burning you out is not a personal failure.
You can just mark it as unmaintained and walk away.
Maybe someone else will pick it up.

oh neat, I had a hunch that the powerbank just refused to go to 9V2A because it was empty, turns out I was right. I guess it was worth figuring out how to update this thing (it updates by presenting as FAT mass storage and some change to Windows made it stop working properly, luckily, Linux exists)

I'm already running custom firmware on this thing and sadly the hardware can't support USB-PD
got a Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0 compatible power bank because that's what my soldering iron needs and this is a great way to learn that QC3 is an awful standard that's super annoying to support
