@thethinktanker afaik it boils down to one of both of two things:
- find one or more animals you think are cool
- find ones you identify with or want to identify with
Then you have a set to pick from. You don't have to be constrained to animals that exist either.
Idk about a maker but the best thing I can think of is second life I guess

@vahnj Symbiotic relationships with (comparatively) huge things that are remarkably difficult to kill are a good idea overall when your species is trying its best to get by in a hostile world full of cave bears and ferrous materials, so shadowing family groups while tidying up or performing simple repairs quickly became a valid survival strategy. Not quite like the domestication of dogs, but a similar piggybacking mindset.
