re: 'pataphysics experiment, foodcrime, timecrime, ama

@KitRedgrave I mean, there isn't ONLY ruin, but sooner or later you've got to deal with the heat death of the universe.

You're talking to a raccoon. One creature's ruin is another creature's playground. *chrrrr*

re: 'pataphysics experiment, foodcrime, timecrime, ama

@001zlnv You name it, I've probably tried to put it in cheap ramen.

I'M A RACCOON, REMEMBER? n.n

survivor's guilt (~)

I mean, who knows what will happen. Maybe that title will be tragically ironic in a few months.

But it's really hitting me, in a black-comedic way, just how absurdly lucky Peg and I are compared to so many people in the middle of this calamity.

I didn't even DO anything to earn this work-at-home job. A friend of a partner found it for me. There was a skill-based "audition" but no real interview process. It was just the perfect job at the perfect time.

But here I am, after years of my worrywart friends telling me I "needed plan" and "needed to get some real career skills," prepared to thrive when so many other people who had good stable jobs are suddenly screwed one way or the other.

It's the comedy of being on a battlefield and suddenly realizing the soldier standing next to you is missing their hat... and most of their ear. And it was a total coincidence, during the frantic run for cover, that you got the cozy spot behind a brick wall. And it's all you can do to squeeze in and hold your breath and hope to give some other bloke half a chance while you clumsily return fire.

I will do what I can. My finances were depleted badly just before I got this promotion and raise--another undeserved miracle--but as soon as things stabilize enough that I can get a good picture of my budget, I will try to start being one of the helpers. I will probably lean on you folks to help me decide how.

re: Self-reflection on symptoms, Likely an anxiety rant (~-)

@Phorm Serious question: what's the pollen report like in your part of the country? We are SLAMMED with treefuck and I've been having VERY similar symptoms.

re: mh (+), media, trivial, smeg

@xinjinmeng Oh, Trek was never sacred in my households, especially during my really transhumanist phase. Trek was always the exemplar of "humanist as opposed to something better." So many times they were on the verge of doing something truly transcendent, only to turn back with the rationalist equivalent of "Well, if we were really meant to fly, God would've given us wings."

re: corona virus, NJ, liquor +

@001zlnv I understand why they want to do it quick and dirty (clean?) right now, and my hat's definitely off to them for their generosity... but dammit, when this is all over I DEFINITELY want to see some exotically flavored craft santizers. :)

re: mh (+), media, trivial, smeg, possibly Red Dwarf spoilers downthread

Ahh, the "Dimension Jump" (Ace Rimmer) episode.

I'm not going to discuss the spoiler in detail (feel free to do so in replies, I'd LOVE to talk about it) but this episode has what might be my single favorite plot twist in all media. I love what it says about the influences that make a person "good" or "bad." (There's that dualistic morality theme again...)

re: mh (+), media, trivial, smeg

I hadn't realized how much I missed this show. It's hacky and tropey and broad, but I love it, maybe BECAUSE of those traits.

Half the fun is picking out all the unexamined assumptions and having a good think over them. Like, I love all the episodes with "pure good," "pure evil," "superior" or "perfect" beings--which seem to be a major recurring theme--and picking apart stuff like "Why does being 'good' mean being non-violent to the point of being completely ineffectual?" :) (e.g. "Angels and Demons")

And I've always had a soft spot for how completely disinterested RD is in continuity. It's virtually nitpick-proof, not that this has stopped the True Fans from trying, because it just DOES NOT CARE. The sci-fi is all joke-driven. the technobabble is all contextual and subject to retcon at any moment, and I actually like it better that way.

And I'll always love the show for having the gall to retcon and ENTIRE SEASON FINALE with a screen crawl. That's a devotion to "let's get the fuck on with it" that... well, I'd love to see Westworld do it. :p

mh (+), media, trivial, smeg

I found my hidden trove of Red Dwarf S1-8, so... yeah, I'm doing pretty good.

re: mh, cratering, request (~-)

@xinjinmeng @Phorm I was just sitting here pondering whether it would be insensitive to propose a Hands-Across-America-like attempt to get enough people around the dragon pudge to hug them properly. :D <3

re: money, uspol, covid, etc (+?)

@hummingrain There is apparently a weed-friendly B&B in Capitol Hill and when I finally make it out there again I am sorely tempted to just get it for 2 weeks and hold court in whatever THC-fueled subdimension opens up there. :)
