basking in the utter gobsmacked shellshock of how normal my life still seems compared to so many other people

it's that guilty feeling of watching the guy next to you in the trench get a bullet in the shoulder and knowing he's STILL one of the lucky ones, 'cause it wasn't through his face...

...compounded by that awful knowledge that the general responsible for this is an inept privileged cretin, just sitting in his office, playing with a map covered in toy soldiers
