Ex-Christian I had to go through this whole process once before. And it really, really scares me to see signs of that kind of moralist purism in the philosophical home that I fled to after I ran screaming from fundamentalist Christianity.

I would not do this if I didn't think feminism were worth it.

And because dammit, here we have lengthy insight into the mind of an abuser. We can learn a lot about how Polanski thought of women, and how that may have shaped his crimes. That's USEFUL knowledge of the enemy.

By all means, avoid things that traumatize you. Support others in this. But don't generalize it all into some kind of "sinful" knowledge. Humans love forbidden fruit. DON'T EMPOWER IT LIKE THAT.

The above rant, incidentally, is why I get really twitchy when I hear somebody say that we need to get "more militant."

That's the kind of logic I associated with militancy, a need to totalize absolutely everything so that it ties into The Cause, and to judge everything by how well it fits The Cause's running dogma.

I'm a pretty rabid feminist -- for survival reasons if nothing else -- but I'm a Discordian pope first. Y'all have spread a lot of bad order in the pursuit of something good. -__-

And if you're one of those baby activists who can't yet even separate criticism of your tactics from criticism of your cause... my desire to talk this out with you is even LOWER than zero.

I'm fucking tired of the purism and self-justifying strategies of "my team," as if just pursuing the "right" ideology relentlessly and exclusively were somehow equivalent to virtue. Ask any Taoist: it ain't.

Granted, I'm biased, a fence-straddlin little chimera here...

I mean, fight the good fight, do what you can against the patriarchy, but please don't summon demons, goetic nor memetic, to do your dirty work for you.

The whole thing struck me as a scurrilous, "do you still beat your wife" kind of strategy from day one, a nasty and cynical logical trap that punishes people just for joining the discourse -- a discourse ABOUT THEM, so what the fuck, people?!

I should've been louder about this sooner and I'm very sorry.

I mean, FFS, the very first day I saw that tag in use -- despite being in total sympathy with people trying to point out the huge, virulent flaws in modern masculinity -- I thought, "Wow, this is sure gonna get misused."

But I didn't hate it, nor you for spreading that kind of tactic, until I saw it mutate into #NotAllVegans, just to shut down some poor kid trying to fight stereotypes of _their_ group.

*Defending* #NotAllMen is not grounds for blockade.

Defending #NotAllMen is grounds for me cruelly mocking the irony of your defense with the hashtag #NotAllNotAllMen.

If I don't get to say, "No, seriously, my experiences have been NOTHING like what you describe, and there do seem to be a lot of these cases, whether you like it or not," then neither do you.

But OTOH, radfems really don't take well to me pointing out that "#NotAllMen" really fucks over people on the enby spectrum, by denying men are capable of feminine (or even *responsible* behavior), and forbidding us to talk openly about the exceptions.

I can't count the number of "not-trans-enough" friends who have been terrified back into hiding by this kind of heartless, dogmatic thought-terminating cliche bullshit.

Watching a bunch of gamer bros speculate about what the phrase "non-binary, feminine adjacent" could possibly mean.

It's hilarious. It's like the Blind Men and the Elephant... if by the end of the story, most of the blind men were left flailing around, half-stuck in various elephant orifices/crevices through their own inept investigations, flailing around and screaming that they were being eaten by a monster.

It's just so easy to confuse these people.

Seriously, I kinda wonder sometimes why activists haven't tried more strategies like this to demoralize the rank and file. I know first-hand what kind of effect a few really persistent cranks can have on somebody's desire to do their shitty, socially corrosive job.

Normally my sympathy for workaday phone operators is huge, but... dammit, not if they're working for a government agency actively deporting kids and innocent professionals. They're lucky to avoid the noose. -_-

Calling the ICE anonymous deportation tip line and playing the Seinfeld theme song autotuned to middle C, for as long as the operator would put up with, proved to be a far more gratifying exercise than originally anticipated.

The secret, apparently, is to play it just quiet enough they think there's just a problem with the phone line. I lasted like a minute and a half.

I like to think I was jamming their line just as someone was trying to report their 6-yr-old neighbor. ^___^

Dammit, I'm stuck in that "am I getting sick or not" stage again. Throat and sinuses are a mess, body is achy, but it doesn't really seem to be advancing.

I really hope whatever it is clears up before Peg gets back, because I have DESIGNS on that dragon.
