I appreciate that the protagonist of the Ys series, Adol, is literally just an "adventurer", in that that's what he calls himself and what he does

there's no contrived story of some average farmer kid becoming a great hero or anything, this is someone who literally set out with the intent of having amazing experiences, and is successful at it

@socks things we consider essential to being a jrpg:
- A levelling and equipment system (Ys has this)
- combat takes place in a separate mode from exploration, with or without a battle transition (Ys does not have this)
- More emphasis than the average game on story (Ys has this)
- Combat that is more strategic than execution-based (Ys does not have this)

those are the things i can think of right now, which are why Ys feels way more like an action game than a JRPG to us
