petition to rename the "fight or flight" response in a work setting to "complain or cry"

re: Stress tests

Definitely had at least one call with coworkers that I normally shepherd carefully through things where I legitimately heard about 20% of what they were saying, and just responded to everything with "oh, yep, that seems good! I think you've got it figured out, so, yeah, just go with that!"

Stress tests

Spent a lot of this week under a sudden stress due to a big government bureaucracy thing that basically made me worried I was going to inevitably get in a lot of trouble.

I'm confident I've figured out a solid path forward now which is helping me slowly chill out, but boy, it sure was hard to concentrate on like, work and such when a big part of my brain was just dedicated to screaming at me on an unending loop

Phone / Tech 📱

@fineursine if you do this, let me know - I have the same phone and I think I'm at the same place with it

Mood/FE

@tfproxy try not to beat yourself up about it, I guess is my point. There'll be other opportunities, for sure

Mood/FE

@tfproxy I was talking about this with Ang, and we agreed that a big reason why we're comfortable doing this is because we didn't have a choice about breaking this seal. We've had to travel and mingle because the alternative would be to just not see each other for 2/3 years, so given that we've done stuff already and been fine it's made this seem daunting yes, but not insurmountable. For someone who has been able to stay locked down, it makes sense for this to be 0 -> 1000

@Balina you wouldn't, no - the other same day birthday was a friend of mine from Scotland from outside this sphere

@Balina happy birthday yo! I actually know three folks with birthdays today, so it's a popular choice among cool folks!

re: Surprisingly non-covid anxiety about an upcoming social event

@fineursine in their defence, it was spelled out pretty clearly, I'd just blown it up in my head.

re: Surprisingly non-covid anxiety about an upcoming social event

I have this problem with Halloween-type fancy dress to be honest, in that I'm intensely uncomfortable wearing anything that stands out. That's probably something I should work through at some point, but someone else's wedding probably isn't a great time to do that

Surprisingly non-covid anxiety about an upcoming social event

Been getting more and more anxious about an upcoming wedding recently, and only now checked the invite and saw that wearing drag is optional, not mandatory. In fact, they specifically say "show up however you feel comfortable".
I'm not going to wear jeans and a t-shirt or anything, but I'm glad I can aim for my normal nondescript fancy without it being a problem.

anselm's ontological argument for god, pizza, shitpost

@kotep this is true, but I think you might have proved that the greatest possible pizza is also god, given that a divine pizza is by definition greater than any other

Whether the greatest god is also pizza is left to the mind of the reader

CW sickness, death, employee management

@abe_e_seedy I don't think there's a good answer here. I tried to act like a human and not a business entity, but at the same time I didn't want her to feel like I was being overly familiar, or that she needed to walk me through it all in depth.
idk. my solution to management problems is basically always to say "fuck the company line, value the person", but this is just a hard situation to handle in general. Actually seeing her again kinda bought that home

@abe_e_seedy I repeated that work isn't what's important here, but I understood that she might just want stuff to do, so I was happy to give her low-pressure, useful tasks. She didn't volunteer much - one of the most notable changes from her past self - but she did mention that her family thought it was too soon for her to start back at work, but she'd been finding not having anything to do harder on her mental health.

@abe_e_seedy she'd already booked about 2 months off due to the operation (which didn't happen), so we expected her back end of July at the earliest. I found out last week though she wanted to come back July 1st, and like I said, I had my first call with her today.

It was hard. There was clearly just a lot of her missing, and she was trying to find stuff to do to fill the day. I spoke a lot, trying to find a way to say "this sucks, I'm sorry" acceptably

@abe_e_seedy this is a big reason why I kinda disappeared from Twitter (and here) for several months, because I couldn't really figure out how to phrase "work is weird because a coworker I talk to daily just had her husband die". Then I wound up hurriedly needing to move, then having Lindsey visit, so I was just busy or distracted for some time.

The husband worked for our company too, which added a twist. I didn't know him personally though

Had the first call today with someone I directly manage in India since she started back at work last week. She'd been going through a long period of difficulty, trying to get successful treatment for her husband's long term illness. Eventually she'd been booked to donate part of her liver, and right when they were in hospital waiting to be prepped, covid swept through. They both got it, she recovered, he didn't.

Travel / Bargains 🛫

@fineursine yo, if you do end up coming through London, let me know. No pressure either way for sure, but it'd be cool to hang out in person if you're up for that!
