It worked! It's just mildly disconcerting.

I lit a candle to try to clear a room of cleaning spray scent, and the candle refused to stay lit; it kept smothering itself in its own wax.

I poured the extra wax into a second container, and I ended up with more wax in the second holder than in the first, and without a wick to burn it.

I tried to put a wick in the wax while it was still hot and splashed my laptop trackpad.

I put a makeshift wick on top of the wax and it's burning the whole surface at once.

Also, TIL rolled-up paper towel soaked in wax makes a really good makeshift wick.

TFW you google for a functional hapax knowing it's going to turn up a something you wrote and you turn up a Tor onion link of somebody's old FA rip.

Ash is inevitable. Change leaves behind residue in its wake, whether a chrysalis or a nova remnant. Putrefaction is the mourning of ash, the return of the unused and the discarded to the prima materia, the undifferentiated base matter of the universe. Perhaps it will benefit another. Perhaps it will return in new forms. The release of ash is also part of the cycle, the remembrance of who we were and why we chose to become who we are.

The Work Continues

When fire has run its course, what remains is the burned-out remains of its passing. The heat of digestion gives way to the shine of distillation. The errant spark catches and sublimates the mix, forcing a rethinking, a new approach to refine the process, the reagents, the alchemist. The ashes of failed processes themselves hold clues on to how not to catch fire again, but they still hold heat, and are bitter to the tongue.
