re: uk pol, nhs

@theoutrider I'd say you deserve it, cuz you do.. But this isn't a matter of "deserving"; It's them failing at what they're supposed to be for, for anyone. ><

I hope you manage to get the help you need from them, whatever it takes.

Lots of bats like to take shelter in plant leaves. This is Spix's disc-winged bat – its thumbs have little disk shaped suction cups for climbing.

It likes to hide inside young leaves of Calathea and Heliconia plants, which are still unfurling.

As well as giving a handy sleeping spot, the trumpet shaped leaves act as sound amplifiers, so the bats can more easily hear calls made by other bats outside. This way, the bats can help each other find good places to roost.

This plant is nepenthes hemsleyana. Most pitcher plants are carnivores, adapted to catch prey, but this one's different. It's no good at catching insects. Instead it's a bat house!

The pitchers are the perfect shape and size for bats to roost, and they're adapted to be easy to find with echolocation. In fact, they're such ideal sleeping places that bats will actively choose the plants over other places!

Bats aren't too fussy about where they poop, so the plant gets a steady supply of fertiliser from all the guano its guest leaves behind.

I hope you all realise that whenever you make a Losing My Religion joke I get that jingly guitar riff stuck in my head

Seriously how do you make a guitar that jingly without just replacing your pickups with electromagnetic sleigh-bells-

*searches online*

Oh.. It was a Mandolin all along.

Huh.

(Jingle jingle)

Disability

Okay so really

I've been disabled my whole life and I still don't know what "accessing the community" actually means, let alone "being independent"

I just kinda

Glaze over and go "Oh. Meaningless words.." when they come up.

And then when I have to actually interact with them, use them, I kinda.. Uhhh.. Get overwhelmed really fast.

Because they're super-important to various institutions? And my understanding and agreement is just kinda.. Assumed.

@typhlosion @fireh9lly In terms of VSTs if you have A Lot A Lot Of Money then Komplete 11 is probably gonna be like "Oh now I have all the acoustic VSTs I'll prolly ever need, ok".

I have no experience with Native Instruments stuff tho, I went with Garritan Personal Orchestra + World Instruments, which is a cheaper-but-good alternative to Native Instruments stuff (for my needs, anyway, idk how nicely either play with Reaper also, so check that first)

@typhlosion @fireh9lly I've got an MPK Mini Mk2, which seems pretty popular for very portable midi controller without like, being ridiculously expensive (ymmv there, ofc, but "for a midi controller").

I use it a lot, kinda to the exclusion of my larger Livekey 49 (which is nice, shiny, versatile, but heavy & bulky), but that's more accessibility stuff at home and my setup than uh, performing live (which I have 0 exp. with)!

Still, it's a good little keyboard, if little keyboard be what ye seek

Password Advice, Memory Problems, Security Questions

@Doggo as someone who also has lots of memory issues

I use Keepass, and just get it to generate a new password for security questions

keepass.info/

My understanding of security questions is that answering them honestly is also v. risky, due to the them either being easily found on Facebook/etc or vulnerable to a dictionary-attack

So yeah, my first car or elementary school or whatever tends to be "189yIUib3tIT7zV" or something, and I only have to *remember* one good password.

(It also has logs of when entries were created when you look at them, so might help with "When did you create this account?" type questions)

I love flying foxes!
I'm obligated to, aren't I?

Also found another good historical fashion book (Historical Fashion in Details: the 17th to 18th Centuries).

I think we forgot how lovely books of clear diagrams of historical pieces paired with hi-resolution photography of the details & construction are.

That kinda professional-and-assuming-decent-reader-knowledge pragmatism of the diagrams & descriptions, paired with all involved still getting to coo at ridiculously embroidered cuffs.

That "Civ Dude's: At The Gates" 4X game was advertising itself with

"Will you take the place of the crumbling Roman Empire.. Or will you be forgotten forever!?"

And yet The Byzantines managed to do both in a single playthrough

I suppose when you get this far into in "Hideo Kojima Boss Monologue" territory, the only way out is through, huh..?

I'm done. I'm gonna go.. Eat, then try to chase up the NHS on (happily, unrelated) things.
