Seriously, I'm glad they specifically mentioned what they wanted is subjecting these shows/characters to intense criticism, not disappearing them outright because they meet a single subject-matter flag, with no regard for context or subversive value. That would have been a *tremendous* sticking point for me and I would've ended up feeling sour for the rest of the day.

Anyhow, I ended up agreeing with it, so thanks for sharing it! I actually went on a bender of crime-procedural shows a couple months ago and... god, most of them were functioning on such a naive ideological level I ended up running screaming. I couldn't even handle Monk. -_-

"Watched" The Vast Of Night in the background while finishing up work tonight. I think it's one of those films that's earned being viewed with my full attention, so I can actually *think* about how all the pieces fit together.

Good stuff. Basically, imagine a paranoid 1950s atomic sci-fi story redone with 2020 moral values and cinematic realism. There's a definitely theme of sociocultural haves and have-nots that I'm going to have to tease out in more detail next thru.

Very mild spoiler coming:

Spent the whole film waiting for a cheap screenwriting trick (a la the tacky martial arts combat that ended so much of the "thoughtful" sci-fi of the 1990s) that never actually happened. Just solid, spooky character-driven small town sci-fi all the way through. Highly recommended.

@Phorm Hey, no foolin', I MISS my parents' old air popper. The microwave stuff just isn't the same... and it's all about those sexy jet-stream aesthetics.

(Can genies live in air poppers? I mean, there's oil, there's heat, could it technically be considered a lamp?)

@anthracite Oh, no, no, I read about this one. It's like that Science of Discworld book, a non-fictional companion about atmospheric chemistry. I wouldn't get your hopes up, Enmerkar has an advance copy and was very disappointed. It was mostly oxygen so it kept combusting while he was trying to read it. ;p
