Hm, if they ever make Dishonored 3, a fun way to do the runes might be this:

There's runes that allow you new abilities (maybe even instead of direct 'magic' stuff). "Oh heck I can wall-jump now!"
Then there's other runes that augment or stack on top of that. "I can wall jump three times, and also heal a bit each time!"
"I can wall jump and do a super-cool reverse kill..."

Combining those into larger runes would nicely mix and match!
