I love that the physically-largest species of skate is called the "big skate".

Hi! I was displaced by wildfires and am raising a little money to cover a breathing mask + necessities. Help out and get some art!
Anything extra I raise will be used to help other people in my community effected by the wildfires. :)

the crows are gathering in our strip of woodland again. the volume (in both sound and amount) of their caws is gradually increasing.

earworm music

I have had the song "Saint Elmo's Fire" stuck in my head for the last couple of days, which is kind of annoying because I kind of loathe it.

food

okay, this protein bar doesn't taste like ass. it's not *good*, but it's edible. :|

here we see a feline in their natural state: a vaguely circular blob of fur with protruding claws

oh hey it's mental health day. so um. I have a depressive disorder. fortunately I found medication that helps a lot, and it's currently mostly in remission, but I do have occasional flareups. it has affected my life profoundly, immeasurably. I'm still learning who I am and what I can do when I'm not chained to that massive boulder. anxiety is a strong secondary disorder, but it's also mostly under control.

so... that's me. /wave

if anyone is looking for some decent, basic shared hosting, Namecheap has a coupon right now HOST4ABUCK will get you a year of their "value" hosting for $1 for the first year.

been using them for a couple years now and they're solid. nothing fancy. this isn't for VPS stuff, but if you want domain emails, and a place to stick a web presence this is a decent deal. renewal is $39, so even that's not bad.

@ElectricKeet @noelle ditto aaaaallll that. plus a feeling of sick realization, that it's really *really* difficult to find anything in our society that isn't steeped in racism and/or some other kind of systemic injustice. :|

Birbhell meme:
What five films would you tell a potential significant other to watch to know what kind of person you are?

my answers:
1. Jurassic Park
2. Lilo & Stitch
3. Only Lovers Left Alive
4. Jupiter Ascending
5. Evil Dead 2

This seems weird to modern sensibilities, but audiences at the time could tell "Hello! Ma Baby" was about telephones simply by the presence of "hello" in the title. The word was used more as a cry of surprise or a call for attention than as a greeting.

It was Edison who popularized "hello" as a telephone greeting, and the word was so strongly associated with phones that switchboard operators were called "hello girls". It wasn't until the 30s and 40s that "hello" caught on as a general greeting.

Fun fact: "Hello! Ma Baby", today best known as the song Michigan J. Frog sings in the classic short "One Froggy Evening", was written as a "coon song" - a racist parody of black people. It's about a man who's never met his sweetheart and only talks to her on the telephone.

The song sent up black people's perceived "backwardness" and "promiscuity" - because it's implied the sweetheart is sleeping around, and because it was considered laughable that a black person would know how to use a phone.
