Why is it that a licensed medical provider is allowed to put my personal information into a system that:
• is proprietary and closed-source;
• requires JavaScript just to display a login page;
• has a lengthy legalese "terms and conditions" that purports to automatically apply upon my use of the service before I've even read it;
• explicitly states that they aren't obligated to keep backups or make the info available to anyone;
• was implemented without notifying me?
How is this even legal?

If you think the only reason to use a self-hosted social network is if you want to circumvent the laws, you're making the same argument as only wanting privacy if you've got something to hide. YouTube ran an algorithm to delete "extremist videos" and accidentally irreversibly deleted a bunch of historical evidence of destruction of Syrian historical sites. Shit like that happens all the time when someone else is in charge.

A coworker from a sister team in Builder Tools recognized me on the bus. He lamented my departure as unfortunate and inappropriate. We talked about old projects and he said in two years I could reapply and head back.
He's an SDE 3 now. He was a 1 when I left ahead of fears of being fired. His manager put him on a PIP. Hard not to wonder how things could have gone if I hadn't been under my manager then. Inflection points.
@inurashii My annual mythopoeic retelling of the Feast of Plenty, Bandaza, is coming up in three months and planning is just starting. This year I have a freshly remodeled kitchen so I can squeeze through even more feasting!

@Ratttz My biggest complaint with most forms of currency is that the method of getting it is usually tied to some form of universal scarcity model that privileges some subset of workers suites to cope with that scarcity, which creates class ex nihilo. You can have time-based currency, but not everyone gets paid the same for the same work under that model because of skills variance. UBI theoretically fixes that, but you'd want a robust gift economy backing it.
