Dieting

@weird_hell@cybre.space Every day is day one. Every day is a new chance to say "I will be good to myself today. I will take care of myself today. I will support my best eating habits and listen to my body and not just to my tastebuds and my boredom." I cannot forgive you, but I can acknowledge your struggles and perhaps find another chance to forgive myself. I wish you strength in your struggles. Maybe you won't win every day, but I believe we can all win more than not with time, effort, and love.

tmi, egg

@LexYeen @zebratron2084 @skolli@mastodon.social I can think of volunteers.

@slimekat On the back end, his database was two fields: ID and DATA. DATA was an import of whatever Data::Dumper spat out, which prevented us from upgrading our OS because Dumper's serializing algorithms aren't consistent from version to version; they warn as much in their software. I suggested we should upgrade to Data::Serializer, perhaps, for compatibility. I got told maybe I should just stick to operating the tool, not trying to be a developer.

programmers bad

@slimekat This was the same software that provided an inline text area to let people write their own sort algorithms for doing complex data sorting. It accepted arbitrary perl code and made no attempt to detaint its input, which it ran as root, because the program ran as root on its hosts. When I asked him what his defense was against "for find unlink," his response was to tell my boss I wasn't a team player.

Good times.

@slimekat For just under a year, I worked on a tool called "the data pump" whose UI was designed by a math Ph.D. He used LessTif to do it. In 2004.

If you wanted to quit the program, and you had outstanding changes, the dialog window that it popped up asked "LOSE UNSAVED CHANGES?" It had a radio selector for yes and no, and an "execute" button. To save, you had to select the "no" radio selector and click "execute." Closing the window, picking yes, or making no selection quit without saving.

USpol

@drwho Not with any sort of _active_ anticipation. More like a faintly sick awareness that we're a lot closer than we should be, for reasons which all made perfect sense at the time. The conspiracy of common sense.

Comcast, Vulgar

Fucksakes, Cumcrust Retention, how many times do I have to say, "Comcast is an oligarchy, I'm a socialist" before you stop trying to justify my cord-cutting on your service issues. Even if I had service issues, what was I going to do, threaten to leave unless you fixed them?

Mind you, CenturyLink ain't better, just another corporate overlord, but at least they haven't withheld lube or demanded two months' free rent for the privilege of leaving. Yet.

"Elon Musk-Jeff Bezos-Paul Allen-Larry Page-Mark Zuckerberg turducken"

@snipejaeg@wandering.shop @DialMforMara businessinsider.com/bitcoin-mi

Short form: Bitcoin -- most cryptocurrencies, to be sure, but BTC's the biggest adopter and thus the biggest taret -- is doing more harm than good between the currency speculation and the total power consumption being wasted on bitflipping.

@snipejaeg@wandering.shop @DialMforMara Okay, so, insofar as currency is an arbitrary value store, value is subjective, the price of all goods are arbitrary, anything _could_ be used as currency if people agree to use it as a value store, and exchange rates normalize to reflect relative spending power of currencies across a range of economic systems, you are correct, yes. All currencies lack intrinsic value. You're very perceptive.

@DialMforMara Nope! It's just a good loaf of bread. Mostly it's there to tell people who believe in Bitcoin that they're really just the latest form of gold rus speculators and not all that libertarian.

Today's bad idea: open a business called Bitcoin Bakery. Sell bread via the internet, 1 BTC a loaf. Accept only BTC and post a mission statement saying that, as a reserve currency, bitcoin holds no value whatsoever on its own. Therefore, this site exists to let people buy something material with their bitcoin. Liquidate all BTC upon purchase. Bake bread.

@LexYeen @starkatt TOS was and did, explicitly. It's why they had eps like Let This Be Your Last Battlefield. Later shows lost their vision over time as the directors and producers lost their appetite for social commentary.
