pokemon scarlet/violet first impressions (no spoilers)

@cinnamon i feel really sorry for game freak

they really are under a colossal amount of pressure considering their size (which is often split in two to meet cascading deadlines!) and the fact that TPC really Does Not give them very much to make what is essentially the "heart" of pokemon

i think they do a phenomenal job usually! but also, it makes a lot of sense that the games that actually advance the series are a little shaky

@codl maybe A would be the original and B is a sample of it?

splat 3

hee, it's almost time to play with a bunch of people who should be able to destroy me easily

i'm super-curious how well i'll do!

i've been practicing my squiffer game almost every single match since i got the game, and i hope there's something i can do that will surprise them~

@Felthry i always love it when people learn things!

it always confused me when someone bettering themselves was seen as a reason to make them feel bad

The "lucky 10,000" mindset (xkcd.com/1053/) is a much more positive and helpful way of thinking about things than the "how do you not know that?" mindset. try to make people part of today's lucky 10,000, not just belittle them for not knowing things!

i can understand that being pessimistic means you can kinda just "hedge" all of your assumptions, since you'll be mentally ready for it when bad things do happen, and can be pleasantly surprised when they don't

but it also takes soooo much extra emotional energy to perpetually think that the worst case scenarios will happen

(it also saps you of the energy you'd have to make your own positive changes, since the point of trying seems far less rewarding than it actually would be)

it's easy to think of counterexamples, of course! but those situations aren't what happen most of the time! (that's why these situations are still jarring)

Show thread

one of the interesting things about being generally optimistic is how naive it seems at first glance

like, even if a situation had an equal chance of turning out good or bad, it's generally seen as more realistic to assume the worst

that's not even taking into account how most people actually do legitimately try to improve things they interact with, because they actually do care about things in the same way you do!

@mcc yup! that's what i was running until today actually~

thank you for the heads up though!

seriously though, shoutout to @mcc for making this happen..! i suuuper appreciate the effort you put into this

thank you! ^^

oooh! now that focal setting is in mainline, i think i can use tusky as my main client finally!

i've always appreciated it as a project, but needing to switch to something else any time i uploaded anything was kind of a drag

so i'm really happy for this release, aaa

Show thread

@dzuk oh!! you drew this!

i noticed it in tusky test, and it still makes me really happy

thank you..!

re: splat 3

@codl oh dang! you've really been climbing..!

congrats! ^^

re: programming language discourse, long

@kurtm @noracodes like, it's actually kinda heartbreaking how gatekeepy programming circles can be--where self-doubt can get to someone who does things that are so neat! but feels like an outsider still

i feel like a lot of the differentiation between "real vs not" programming languages are half done by gatekeepers to protect a self-worth they have from feeling like they are part of a "rare elite" that doesn't actually exist, and half done by the gatekept because of imposter syndrome, and the resistance they would face if they didn't second-guess themselves

re: programming language discourse, long

@kurtm @noracodes thinking about someone who wrote her own keyboard driver to control the dos raycasting engine she also wrote, and how she still doesn't consider herself a "real programmer"

imposter syndrome can be really mean sometimes

imo, if you want to be a programmer, you don't even need to have written any code yet for me to consider you one!

@noiob @Claire i liked being in the middle!

but i'm also extremely masochistic, so...

FastDoom in more esoteric CGA:
- Composite output
- 160x100 16 colors
- 80x100 122 pseudocolors
- "ANSI from Hell" (320x100, 16 colors)

@SomeEgrets i think you can transfer your account and it migrates your follows/followers too?

i haven't done this of course, but i've seen mention of it around a bunch! and that means you can use whatever instance you like without needing to worry about too much hassle~

@SomeEgrets yeaaah, i've definitely been there ^^'

i hope you feel better soon though! (also, it's nice seeing you around again..!)
