That's Joan Feynman; her brother Richard was one of the scientists at Los Alamos working on the Manhattan Project.

"When I was a child, it was believed that animals became extinct because they were too specialized. My father used to tell us about the saber-tooth tiger’s teeth — how they got too big and the tiger couldn’t eat because he couldn’t take game anymore. And I remember my father saying, with my brother sitting there, ‘I wonder what it will be with the human beings that will be so overspecialized that they’ll kill themselves off?’

My father never found out that my brother was working on the bomb."

Oh, another tip for new Mastodon users. There is no global search, outside of users or hashtags. That means you can criticise and curse things using their true name without accidentally summoning a group of sealions.

Given that this (mastodon.social) is most shared instance, to preserve the ideals of decentralization we have closed sign ups in favour of spreading new users through the various alternative instances

— you get access to the same network wherever you sign up —

You can find a lot of these instances here:

Patreon post

Awoofriends- we have a Patreon if you want to support our staff!

The money goes to me, which I
then distribute to our staff when payments hit. I have very good full-time employment and do not take any money for myself.

Currently we've only paid @kyra for her art, and we commission her at least once a month on top of that!

She's very busy, but her next piece will be a drawing of the story that won the competition to name @awoofriend.

right fucking now is the best time and possibly our last chance to drive a stake into the heart of capitalism, boost if you agree

BunnyHugger: "Why are you wearing those sports workout shirts? You look like you're in Tron."
Me: "Thank you!"

(I'm wearing them in the hopes I start exercising again and also I kind of look like I'm in Tron.)

can't believe they called it metroid prime when 4 is a composite number

capitalism, body positivity

the revolution will not come from a corporation.

how capitalism ruined #bodypositivity

I don't care what genre, I don't care how expensive, I don't care who makes it, I don't care what it's about—

I would play any videogame if Reggie Watts did the soundtrack.

I have had it up to my eyebrows with software that:

• forces me to do wrench the guts of the system just to get it working right;
• forcefully reverts the changes I made to get it working right;
• asks yes-or-no questions as yes-or-nag-me-again-later;
• uninstalls working third-party software that improves on its functionality (yes, this has happened);
• claims to be free but then tries to throw ads at me anyhow;
• makes me pay for it then just up and stops working.

Fuck Microsoft and Adobe.

And I'll set up a VM with a copy of Windows 7 stripped of anything like telemetry, and I'll use that for the scant few apps worth keeping around. I'll take a melon baller to the bits of code that suggest such nonsense is even necessary. Any software I legitimately own the right to use, I will install with whatever methods are necessary to make them simply work without phoning home. I'm never getting a piece of legit software yanked out from under me again.
