Seeking gardening help

@adeptomega I'm not seeing anything in a google search and a couple of botanical sites that look like that. Is it only the one leaf? Do the others look normal? If so, that may be "something bit this" and the moisture got in." Trimming the one leaf is probably enough. If you look underneath, and you don't see any eggs, white or yellow spots on the leaves, or weak stems, I think we're safe. If you see anything else, let me know; we can look that up.

@Fuego @indi @Oneironott "You never know when you go in whether you'll be the one that appears on top or the one underneath."

cultural appropriation

@qualia @indi In all seriousness, I don't think there's really getting away from the fact that we're the product of culture that has engaged in a ton of historical appropriation, to the point that even trying to craft something ex nihilo risks some form of appropriative use. It feels like all I can do is acknowledge that fact, boost the original voices as I can, and try to rectify what pain I can as I go. =x.x=

cultural appropriation

@indi @qualia Here's a fresh layer of textural complications: the practice of burning cannabis as a religious sacrament appears to date to multiple cultures, but there's also a really compelling argument that it's been a core element of spiritual alchemy since the seventh century. Do I have to break down the history of alchemy every time I want to talk about pot in ritual context so I don't sound like a Trustifarian? I talk enough already when I'm high, don't I? =n.n=

@Doephin It didn't look like it was in great shape, so it could easily have been there a year. I only just noticed it, but that's possibly a testament to my cluelessness more than anything else.

Good to see RevCom active. I just wish the news were better. Tell me the good you do, along with the ills of others.

Writing

I think I see the shape of Ties of Iron. I found the larger plot arc against which the conflict between Valentin and Justik -- the iron and blood -- plays out. Now begins the weaving, when threads are laid against each other until the knots can be pulled taut without being seen.

Drugs, Foodcrime

I know the next mango smoothie evolution. I have to try it this weekend.

@bea I already do, but the feature I want is LJ's and DW's access controls. Not just "public" or "private," but "this predefined subset of users" that doesn't cost me post space to tag every time.

tfw you suspect your VPN is why your Amazon order got shipped from canada.

@zebratron2084 Absolutely, I agree that there's no "freedom from offense." In establishing that, though, I think we should take greater care in distinguishing hate speech -- a form of emotional violence -- from the merely crass and tacky. A shirt with "I love long cocks" on it may be crude, but it isn't worth censoring. A shirt with, say, "Martians have tiny penises" on it probably crosses the threshold. The original article seems to treat both statements in the manner of the first.

@zebratron2084 There's an elision in here that makes me uncomfortable. The author seems content to roll "offensive" and "emotionally violent" into the same basket, or at the very least makes no effort to distinguish "this is coded aggression and deserves to be addressed" from "this is merely profane and should be lauded." In failing to separate the two, the author creates space in which bullies can defend violence as locker-room talk and sexism as the price of admission to society.

@KawaSeadrake My first inclination is to suggest Cherry Street Coffee, 'cause they're a very small chain that manages to hold their own. I haven't _tried_ it, but I'd start there if I were looking for such a thing.

@tcql@octodon.social I suspect it's part of the same trend that produced "l10n" for localization and "i18n" for internationalization. That it offers a convenient visual reference to "ally" is worth feelgood points but little else.

That it may be harder to type for people with accessibility issues probably never entered anyone's mind.
