Venting about work

I think it might be time to look for a new job.

They're going to cut off my team from accessing:
• Slack
• Skype
• Dropbox
• Google Drive
• Google Docs
• Gmail
• Telegram
• Trello
• Assembla (our ticketing system and wiki)
and others

They insist they provide everything we need with:
• MS Teams (bad UI & fewer features)
• Skype for Business (company policy doesn't allow chat history or external contacts)
• MS OneDrive (Eh.)
• Company Email
• ServiceNow (…)
• MS Sharepoint

On top of this, they're replatforming to a system based in Java.

I don't know Java. They're offering to teach me which is cool, but... I dunno. Python? Awesome. Ruby? I'm there. ...but Java? ...In 2017??

I mean, all that plus the parent company is heavily invested in the military industrial complex... And so they keep cutting budgets to make up for their losses in sales in that sector and...

I'm not sure I'll ever really be happy at this company, and that sucks. 😞

Today I found out that the company blocks access to Microsoft Teams -- which was the suggested alternative to Slack when my request to unblock Slack was denied.

Also I found out when talking to the helpdesk that they don't use the company provided tools for security reasons(!!!) and guess what they use?

That's right! Slack!

I almost literally cried in frustration today. I started tearing up and got up and made tea and watched stupid shit on YouTube for a while instead

Venting about work (2)

@mawr That seems like a huge shift.. what the hell happened?

@wobblewuffess the company that bought us has very strict security practices and does not trust their user base at all

Venting about work (2)

@mawr best of luck looking. You’ll find something in no time, which I envy, but yeah. It’s a mess.

Venting about work (3)

@mawr what the fffffff

Venting about work (3)

@mawr um??????????

Venting about work (3)

@mawr that’s so fucking unfair what the fuck

I would have cried too

Venting about work (3)

@mawr wait, what? what are you supposed to do now?

Venting about work (3)

@confusedcharlot I opened a ticket with tech support and let my boss know I was being cut off from tools I needed to do my job. He's on it

Venting about work (3)

@mawr That, if you'll pardon my foul wind, is some right cuntish antics right there.

Venting about work (3)

@mawr You deserve better treatment than that, and they have done an utter shite job of easing the transition to the new tool chain.

Venting about work (3)

@literorrery Thanks, hon.

I'm being bent to the breaking point. When they start enforcing these restrictions on my coworkers it'll either get better because they'll be forced to fix these bugs, or it'll get bad enough that I'll either
a) be cut off from my team and eventually let go 'cause they can't accommodate me, or
b) my team will all quit out of frustration.

And of course this all happens literally the two weeks following closing on a house I can barely afford...

Venting about work (3)

@mawr @literorrery *sending you huge piles of empathy and soft hugpets*

Venting about work (3)

@zx3 *hugs* Thanks, hon-- and yeah, it does sound that way, but the worst part about this is it's actual IT people making these calls. ;~;

Venting about work (3)

@mawr *support hugs* >.< Can your manager not help if you push back that it's impacting your ability to work?

Venting about work (3)

@zetasyanthis He's already in the loop, and so completely overwhelmed by all of the things being forced down his throat...

Our whole team has been making a lot of noise about how shitty the company policies are, and my boss has already pissed off the higher ups by trying to stop them from shooting us all in the foot

This really feels like the beginning of the end of our department

Venting about work (3)

@mawr Oh hell. >.< *more and more hugs* I honestly don't know how to help with that. Is there no way your team can utterly ignore the reqs and just do what you need to?

Venting about work (3)

@zetasyanthis Yes, for now we can. I got my IP whitelisted so I can stay off the VPN, thus enabling me to stay in communication with my team and get some work done at the same time

But when they put these rules into effect at their office early next year, I'm pretty much fucked unless they fix a bunch of things in a hurry

Venting about work (3)

@mawr Well, that gives some time to hopefully fix some of this insanity. >.< Might help to set up a VM at home for the VPN, and keep your machine otherwise on your home internet?

Venting about work (3)

@mawr I know I'm grasping at straws, but I'm trying to help. ^^;

Venting about work (3)

@zetasyanthis I sincerely appreciate it, hon. Right now, I'm going to try to get my mind off of this for a while so I can de-stres some. This has taken a huge toll on my reserve of spoons, and I have to start work super early tomorrow for a full day of meetings.. so I'm gonna need a lot of spoons by then

Venting about work (3)

@mawr *overnights an industrial dishwasher, and provides many, many hugs and dragon snuggles* <3

Venting about work

@mawr ....... just.... what...... do they think they're accomplishing there??? aiwoej;qoamv;qehr4gtlqh35t

Venting about work

@mawr So um we use MS crap exclusively. What happens is that we just yell at each other across the open office, print things on paper to share files b/c Office Online barely works, use regular speakerphones for interviews because Skype never works, and every three days someone yells "where the fuck did I save my files is it in groups, teams, exchange, onedrive, other onedrive, or network share?!?!".

I work in education tho so we're still functional. Can't imagine this in tech.

Venting about work

@mawr Also Teams takes up more memory than all my Chrome and Firefox tabs (which contain two Slack tabs, three YouTube tabs, and at least two Trello tabs) combined so it just stops running in the background and doesn't show notifications ever.

Venting about work

@mawr Someone drank a lot of Kool-Aid, hunh?

Venting about work

@mawr WTF?!
Skype for business and MS Teams are terrible.

Onedrive vs Dropbox is kinda eh.. both have pretty much the same features.

It sounds like someone bought hard into the MS cloud koolaid...

Sharepoint is a clusterfuck and the rest of that stuff is difficult as fuck to have external backups... or you know have a functional environment if something goes wrong with Azure..

Venting about work

@mawr Eww, eww, eww. I don't want my cynicism to rub off on you, mawr, but... yeah, every time I've had a job start going south like that, it has been TIME TO GET OUT OF DODGE and I've never once regretted doing it. You gotta get into a place where they respect you and don't think they gotta hamstring you to get you to work properly. God, that kind of authoritarian workplace behavior pisses me off. >_<

Venting about work

@mawr Oof. We're in a very similar boat over here, but have managed to finagle the Atlassian suite on a couple of VMs, plus our own servers. When we swapped from Google to Microsoft for everything, I can't even begin to tell you how much I cursed out the higher-ups. We're still not back to where we were on some things.

Venting about work

@mawr My favorite stupidities were:
1. When they initially decided they wouldn't both migrating email/files/contacts from one to the other and we'd just lose everything in 6 months.
2. They've now set a two year retention on emails. If you need something older, you have to ask for retention on a PER Email basis.

Venting about work

@mawr RE #2: God forbid your engineers would ever have a project last longer than two years... That never happens, right?

Venting about work

@zetasyanthis Hoooooly shit. They didn't even go the office365 route (which includes free live archiving which doesn't add to your counted storage totals)?!

Venting about work

@mawr Not sure about money, as this is a 180k person company, so I'm guessing they negotiate a rate. I think they did it because they're considered business records and there are potential legal liabilities regarding them.

Venting about work

@mawr And it is office 365. They just have settings configured to do that.

Venting about work

@mawr And I guess what I'm saying is this: I'm screaming into the void too. ;_;

Venting about work

@mawr And, uh, long live shadow IT. >.<
