that line in my head, for instance, that was crossed somewhere in the first quarter of the Thomas Covenant series, and which caused me to throw the book against a wall and never want to pick the series up again, and if you've read it you probably know exactly what I mean. :D

one thing I don't like about "Book of the New Sun" is how painfully gendered it is. there's a whole lot of "men do x, women do y" stuff that's related as profound truths. of course, it's written from the POV of a narrator who is shown to be unreliable, but still. plus the way the male narrator acts towards women is kind of gross, both in specific instances and overall attitude, though not quite enough to cross the line in my head.

anyway, I should get my feathered scaly tail to the grocery store if I'm going, as it's shaping up to be an unpleasantly warm day. :P /waves

hmm. the crow family is behaving as if something in this area--the area of my porch, and the grass/tree area around it--frightened them; they're being a lot more wary and avoidant than they were a few days ago. I would attribute this to the loss of one of their fledglings, except that happened over a week ago, and they were behaving just as usual then. I wish I could ask them--or better still, convince them that my porch and Cheerios/peanuts are still safe. :\

relying on another person to "fix" oneself is the surest way to never actually get fixed. it *has to* come from within. having tried it both ways, I know this very viscerally. but I also know a lot of people don't, and/or have bought onto the "magical person X will fix my problem for me!" and have invested a lot of energy and narrative into the concept. much empathy to you, hon.

@mawr that... makes a lot of sense, for the book, yes. and is quite possibly true! but it doesn't get me any closer to figuring out the picture in my head...

speaking of unreliable memory, I now have no idea if I ever actually saw this picture, or if I made it up or dreamed it or what. >___< if I was better at art I could draw it, it's so clearly in my mind! arrgh...

I could *swear* I've seen a painting of this creature; it's looking at the viewer, and it looks--calm, kind of sad; the painting is in muddy earth tones; it might have stars in its crown. there's a Biblical association in my head, but I have no idea if it's a monster from the Bible?

I'm re-reading "Book of the New Sun," and at one point a monster is described in a dream: "a great, leather-winged being"--"her beak was the beak of an ibis, her face that of a hag; on her head was a miter (crown) of bone." I can't figure out what this thing is and IT IS AGGRAVATING ME.

on the other claw, the crows were back today! I don't know if the parents took a vacation or were just hanging out in a different area of their territory or what? but it seems like the family is back together, happily scarfling Cheerios off the porch railing.

something I am allergic to is blooming and large sections of my epidermis itch again today. I'm glad I got the giant tube of Benadryl last time this happened...
